UNESCO has designated parts of the city as World Heritage sites, including St. Martin’s Church, St. Augustine’s Abbey, and Canterbury Cathedral.
The picturesque city of Canterbury attracts visitors from all over the world, and it is only a short train ride from Dover (30 minutes) and London (90 minutes). This is reported by the Daily Express.
It is noted that it is famous for its beautiful landscapes and is compared to Paris: it is a typical English city with cobblestone streets and incredible gardens. Its old-fashioned buildings remind us of its history, but the city also has a number of modern shops.
Interestingly, vacationers compare it to the City of Love due to its abundance of craft shops, boutique galleries, and quaint cafes, which create a romantic atmosphere reminiscent of the French capital.
Canterbury Cathedral is the central point of the settlement. UNESCO has designated parts of the city, including St. Martin’s Church, St. Augustine’s Abbey, and the Cathedral, as World Heritage sites. A visitor on Tripadvisor wrote:
“One for the bucket list. The photos don’t do it justice. Seeing it in person is incredible. We took a tour and the guide was so knowledgeable and passionate that it really made it special. Everyone was professional and so well-organized. The area around the cathedral is beautiful for walking.”
It is noted that the medieval city center is “kishi” with famous shops and exclusive boutiques, and the picturesque alleys are lined with small specialty shops, pubs, and restaurants, making the trip an exciting experience. Another must-visit attraction is the Westgate Gardens. This picturesque area looks like it has stepped out of a movie.
“This is one of the most picturesque areas/parks I’ve ever walked through. There’s so much to see, and every turn brings another great opportunity for photography. Make it a priority when visiting Canterbury,” wrote one visitor.
Interestingly, the city is also known for Chaucer’s “Canterbury Tales,” a historical text that has stood the test of time. This text, which is over 600 years old, is renowned worldwide.
