History buffs will love Transylvania.
June is a great month for traveling if you’re looking for a more relaxed vacation with guaranteed sunshine, fewer tourists, and ideal hiking conditions.
Several destinations from Romania to Peru could be ideal for such tourists, writes The Independent. Original Travel co-founder Tom Barber shared a list of places to visit in June.
Romania
History buffs will love Transylvania in central Romania, with its well-preserved medieval towns. Here, you can see the largest Gothic church in Eastern Europe, located in Brasov. Barber also recommends visiting the city of Sibiu for its incredible Baroque architecture and cobblestone streets. In Sighisoara, you can explore the hilltop citadel and the 14th-century clock tower. Additionally, in Romania, don’t miss the castles of Bran and Corvin.
“Transylvania is essentially a time travel. It feels like you’ve gone back a few hundred years: charming little villages, traditional customs, people still using horses and carts, and shepherds. It’s like a scene from the Middle Ages. There are almost no roads or cars, and it’s truly an old-world region,” Barber shared.
Menorca, Spain
Menorca is the second largest of the Balearic Islands. It is located in the western Mediterranean Sea, northeast of Mallorca.
The expert says that in Menorca, tourists can see both archaeological and cultural sites, as well as relax on the beaches or explore the cliffs and gorges.
The island is surrounded by the Camí de Cavalls coastal hiking trail, which is 185 km long. It is possible to walk around the entire island, although it would take several weeks. However, it is possible to choose a specific section and walk along it.
Lisbon, Portugal
In June, the capital of Portugal will not yet be at its hottest, making it an excellent time to explore its hilly streets and their unique charm.
Travel expert Pippa O’Keefe says that Lisbon “really comes to life in June thanks to Santos Populares.”
“This is basically a month-long festival. The streets are decorated with open-air concerts (arraiais), as well as outdoor barbecues. The most notable celebrations are held on June 12-13 in honor of Santo Antonio, ” she explains.
During the parade, dozens of low-income couples can get married for free at the Church of Santo Antonio and the Cathedral of Ce. The city pays for their celebrations.
June is also Pride Month, and Lisbon celebrates it with great fanfare.
Peru
Tom Barber says that most people think about traveling to Latin America in the winter, but in fact, June is the perfect time to travel to Peru. It’s not too hot during this period.
“Machu Picchu is very crowded right now, but there are many great hiking trails in and around the [Sacred] Valley,” the expert said.Read also:
In other parts of the country, you can see the Colca Canyon, which is up to 3,500 meters deep. This destination is suitable for outdoor enthusiasts, as it offers a challenging route with ups and downs.
Rainbow Mountain (Vinikunka) is another famous hiking trail in Peru. Also, if you visit the country, be sure to visit the islands of Lake Titicaca.
Malaysian part of Borneo
Borneo is the third largest island in the world. It is divided between three countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei.
The Malaysian part of the island consists of the states of Sabah and Sarawak, and this area is famous for its ancient tropical forests and rich indigenous culture. Traveling there is an ideal opportunity to get closer to the wildlife. In addition to dwarf elephants and snub-nosed monkeys, you can also see orangutans in the wild.
“You can also take a boat up the river, spend the night in a traditional tribe, and learn about their way of life. It’s an extraordinary place. It’s not as popular as it should be,” Tom Barber concluded.
