An island in the Aegean Sea offers free accommodation and breakfasts, but with one condition

Tourists are offered accommodation and breakfast, but there is also a daily duty.

The Greek island of Syros is little-known among tourists, but it is increasingly being mentioned as a place to stay for free. However, free accommodation comes at a price.

According to Podroze.gazeta, Syros attracts people with its tranquility and authentic atmosphere, which is difficult to find in popular resorts. While a free apartment for a month on the island sounds tempting, there is a hidden cost: daily animal care.

In other words, free housing is provided to volunteers who have joined the Cats of Syros team, which has been saving homeless animals for many years.

Volunteers become part of the team for at least a month. In exchange for approximately 5 hours of work per day, five days a week, they receive free accommodation and breakfast.

It sounds good, but it’s clear that every day has its own schedule, which is not easy to fit into a vacation, as the amount of work is extensive. Feeding the cats in the morning is just the beginning. Then there’s cleaning the cat area, washing the blankets, and preparing the beds for new animals. Part of the day is dedicated to caring for the kittens, who need to be socialized and prepared for adoption. There are also moments when it’s necessary to treat the cats or be present when they pass away.

On the premises, you live with two or three volunteers from different parts of the world. Each person has their own room, but the kitchen and common area are shared.

In addition, the organization is looking for responsible people who are willing to work without constant supervision. Recruitment is conducted in advance, and the number of positions is limited, so a spontaneous trip is unlikely to work out.

In addition, there are logistical issues: the volunteer pays for transportation to the island, as well as for meals other than breakfast.

However, as the publication noted, taking care of cats can take up a significant part of the day, but that doesn’t mean you can’t explore the island.

“Even with a busy schedule, you can easily go to the sea or go to another city. Most routes take only a few, maximum tens of minutes, ” the publication wrote.

The pearl of the island is the capital, Ermoupoli. Instead of snow-white landscapes, there are pastel townhouses and neoclassical architecture that resemble the south of Italy rather than typical Greek resorts. Narrow streets lead to cafes where no one nervously checks their watch, and conversations are carried on at ease over coffee and snacks.

“This place is a good illustration of what everyday life on Syros is like. After a few hours of work, it’s easy to change your surroundings. A short trip will take you to the beach, where you can visit a restaurant or simply enjoy the view of the water,” the publication concluded.
