In total, 20 cities and regions across Europe were included in the ranking.
The Spanish capital, Madrid, has been recognized as the best European destination to visit in 2026, despite the challenging situation with overtourism in the country.
In total, 20 cities and regions across Europe were included in the ranking by the influential portal European Best Destinations.
How the winner was determined
The winner was determined based on the votes of more than 1.3 million travelers from 154 countries. Before the public vote began, a team of tourism experts analyzed more than 500 destinations across Europe.
At the first stage, key performance indicators were considered, such as the growth of tourism, the increase in online requests, the growth of popularity on social media, and the commitment of each destination to sustainable development, accessibility, and local development. Based on this analysis, 20 destinations were selected for the ranking.
Madrid is the best European destination for 2026
According to the authors of the ranking, Madrid’s leadership confirms its transformation into one of the most attractive European capitals, where culture, lifestyle, gastronomy, and quality of life come together with a rare intensity.
However, it also reflects a broader trend that is shaping the European tourism landscape: destinations defined by identity, excellence, and emotional impact are shaping the future of tourism.
At the heart of Madrid’s cultural scene is the UNESCO-listed Golden Triangle of the Arts, which brings together the Prado, Reina Sofia, and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums in a unique urban corridor where art, architecture, and nature coexist.
However, Madrid’s cultural energy extends far beyond these institutions. Areas like Carabanchel, once industrial, have been reimagined by artists and designers, transforming into vibrant hubs of experimental galleries, studios, and contemporary art, reflecting the city’s constant renewal.
Madrid is also home to flamenco tablaos, a vibrant expression of Spain’s cultural identity that continues to shape the city’s emotional landscape.
With over 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, Madrid unfolds in the open air. Elegant boulevards, bustling squares, and the vast Retiro Park define a lifestyle based on openness and connection. Days seamlessly transition into long evenings filled with terrace culture, rooftop gatherings, and one of Europe’s most dynamic gastronomic scenes, where avant-garde cuisine coexists with historic taverns that preserve generations of tradition.
What also distinguishes Madrid is its remarkable balance – sophisticated yet accessible, vibrant yet livable. The city has expanded green spaces, prioritized pedestrian areas, and developed one of the most efficient public transportation systems in Europe, demonstrating its long-term commitment to sustainability and urban quality. Visitors experience a capital that pulses with energy while maintaining its human scale and authenticity.
“Madrid is extremely proud to receive this recognition as the best European tourist destination of 2026. This award places our city at the center of the European tourism dialogue and confirms the strength of a project based on culture, openness and quality of life. For Madrid, this is an opportunity to continue to welcome visitors from all over the world, while ensuring that tourism contributes positively to the city’s energy, prosperity and identity,” said Almudena Maillo, Tourism Adviser for the Madrid City Council.
